Bringing the ISOC Chapters together - An inter-chapter project proposal

Maintaining its own Internet presence is one of the issues a start-up chapter needs to cope with. Even small chapters that do not yet organize major events could benefit from a simple facility to host their Web page and other information.

There is a need to provide more information exchange between chapters on
the local, regional and global level – such as contact information, event planning, common project management, co-ordinated public relations.

Association Management System is a planned enterprise wide software system that is going to support the ISOC strategic goals by facilitating communication within ISOC.

The goal of this project is to provide a bridging element between the Chapters – in their variety – and the needs of the organization

A shared hosting facility

ISOC Chapters maintain a shared dedicated server, hosted at one of the hosting facilities.
A small administrative team of 2-3 (ideally spread across the timezones) is able to assist the chapters in using the system

Chapters are independent

  • The Chapters differ in their configuration, size and level of activity.
  • The shared facility will provide every chapter with a possibility to maintain its own chapter account, managing their own domain names and Web presence.
  • Per-chapter email configuration should be available (if necessary).
  • Standard open-source database engines and most popular content management systems should be made available – every chapter is free to use whatever they want.

Shared functions – contribution to the AMS

There is a need to share some data with other chapters and the future ISOC Association Management System, like sharing contact/membership/stakeholder data and common event planning. While every chapter will be free to choose the way they are going to manage and maintain their data, there should be some shared facilities available to provide easy interfacing to other chapters, members and the staff.
